MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – An essential improvement to emergency tech at the Myrtle Beach Fire Department might aid in saving lives.
Over the past six weeks, the department has acquired two LIFEPAK 35 units. These tools have the potential to enhance the effectiveness and swiftness of their paramedics during patient transport to medical facilities.
"It's a significant advancement; it simply enables us to complete our tasks more quickly, which is crucial," stated Ryan Bingham, a paramedic with MBFD.
The department currently utilizes an outdated version of the LIFEPAKs, enabling them to send data to hospitals. However, the advanced technology offers greater efficiency in this process.
The 35 has enhanced certain aspects that used to slow us down in the field," explained Bingham. "The key improvements include increased adaptability, with more features operating autonomously once configured. This reduces the mental effort required from our team and minimizes the chance of errors.
And something paramedics always strive not to misidentify—heart conditions. According to Bingham’s statement to WMBF News, the LIFEPAK 35 has the capability to recognize heart rhythms and deliver a necessary shock to patients needing such intervention.
For physicians who receive these, this presents an advantage.
Enhanced diagnostic capabilities in the field allow EMS staff to initiate necessary actions earlier," stated Dr. Paul Richardson, Chief Medical Officer at Conway Medical Center. "Additionally, with faster and more precise diagnosis, we can act more promptly and effectively.
Richardson stated that in such scenarios, time could mean the difference between survival and tragedy, and he expresses hope for broader adoption of this technology.
When we're handling extremely critical emergencies, every second counts, correct?" stated Richardson. "Therefore, it truly is a total success from the moment the patient is picked up until they are brought here.
The MBFD paramedics have indicated that they are prepared to utilize the new LIFEPAK units; however, they are awaiting the delivery of just one additional component before deploying them, with expectations that this might occur within the coming weeks.
