Connecticut Hospital Achieves Milestone: 1,000th Procedure with Innovative Ion Endoluminal System

Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford It is Connecticut’s initial hospital to reach a significant milestone in medicine and technology.

The hospital has announced that they have successfully concluded their 1,000th robotic-assisted bronchoscopy using the Ion endoluminal system. Notably, these 1,000 procedures were performed within a timeframe of fewer than 1,000 days.

The Ion system features an extremely slim and highly agile catheter capable of reaching deep into the lungs, which tackles one of the difficult aspects of performing lung biopsies. When combined with exceptional stability, this enables greater accuracy during the procedure as opposed to alternative methods.

Ion is a component of Saint Francis Hospital’s advanced Thoracic Oncology Program, allowing lung cancer patients to undergo early diagnosis, biopsy, and surgical removal of tumors all within a few weeks period.

The hospital stated that the usual timeframe from identifying a possibly cancerous lung nodule to performing surgery typically takes around two-and-a-half months; however, the program based in Hartford reduced this period to approximately 17 days.

At Saint Francis Hospital, the team specializing in interventional pulmonology and thoracic medicine is headed by Dr. Anil Magge, who serves as the Director of Interventional Pulmonology. This group of healthcare providers are acknowledged as leading experts nationally when it comes to Ion procedures. Notably, Dr. Magge stands out as one of the most proficient individual practitioners nationwide.

In October 2022, Saint Francis Hospital was the pioneering institution in Connecticut to utilize the Ion system.

In a statement, Magge noted that the hospital’s team is proud to have achieved 1,000 procedures using the Ion system. He further emphasized that attaining this milestone underscores the dedication of the staff in utilizing advanced technology alongside their expertise to address challenging and inaccessible nodules for diagnosis.

"This allows us to deliver transformative care by substantially decreasing the timeframe between detection, diagnosis, and commencement of treatment."
