Rainbow City Police Plan to Boost Security with New Cameras in Key Areas

RAINBOW CITY, Ala. ( WBRC A grandfather in Rainbow City claims that his granddaughter narrowly escaped abduction at a local park back in March and is urging municipal officials to add more surveillance cameras for safety. Lieutenant Jordan McCartney of the Rainbow City Police Department mentioned that they are currently addressing this request.

"If it weren't for a couple hosting a birthday party for one of their children who stepped in and interfered, our lives would have taken a different turn that day," stated Craig Patton.

At the meeting with the Rainbow City Council, Patton spoke about increasing camera presence in highly visible locations following a distressing event involving his nine-year-old granddaughter and her companion.

"On March 16, 2025, which happened to be a Sunday, my granddaughter and her companion were almost kidnapped when they were at Park Lane Park. We're simply trying to figure out how we might get some surveillance cameras installed in the park," stated Patton.

The Rainbow City Police report that an individual considered suspicious was spotted in the park. After questioning, officers permitted him to depart. Due to inadequate surveillance coverage, authorities lack evidence regarding any potential occurrences.

We really appreciate the trailer cameras. Both our detectives and I can access them remotely via an app or a computer," explained Chief Camp Yancey. "Currently, we have one unit, but around a year ago, I applied for a grant to acquire four additional units since both my team and the public adore these devices. Once folks realize we possess them, everyone wants to see them installed everywhere.

Yancey mentions that he has discussed with the mayor the possibility of installing additional cameras in critical locations like parks. Randy Smith strolls through the park with his spouse and acknowledges the necessity for extra surveillance.

We frequently traverse the same paths, my spouse and I have been walking them every morning for years, and generally, they've been secure. However, danger lurks outside at all times. Today's crimes often correlate with mental health issues, so we must take action within our neighborhoods to stop such occurrences.

Chief Yancey states that the department has an established plan, and should you ever feel unsafe, his office remains accessible to you at all times.
