MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – On Wednesday night, an outreach event was held at the University of Memphis where students convened to express their views regarding Elon Musk’s involvement with the city of Memphis.
Students in Memphis are stating that they do not want the xAI supercomputer.
This development coincides with Action News 5 receiving a letter from the Shelby County Health Department addressed to Mayor Paul Young last month.
The health department requested of the mayor to prioritize public health above economic development initiatives, referencing xAI's closeness to residential zones and educational institutions.
A student expresses that she doubts Musk prioritizes people's well-being in his intentions.
"We believe that he is exploiting our communities, and our government is placing Elon Musk’s preferences above the needs, demands, and clear sentiments of the people," stated University of Michigan sophomore Orion Overstreet.
Dr. Michelle Taylor, the director of the health department, expresses her hope that the letter will foster significant discussions along with increased clarity and deliberate initiatives.
